How to maintain lead-acid batteries for durability?

Lead-acid batteries are a common type of storage battery, widely used in automobiles, electric vehicles, power tools, solar energy and other backup power fields. The service life of lead-acid batteries is affected by various factors, such as charging and discharging conditions, temperature, moisture, sulfation, vibration, etc.

Therefore, in order to extend the service life of lead-acid batteries and improve their performance and safety, we need to master some maintenance methods, as follows:

1. Avoid overcharging and overdischarging

Overcharge and overdischarge are the main reasons for shortening the life of lead-acid batteries, which can lead to the damage of electrode plates, the loss of active substances, the evaporation of electrolytes, and the precipitation of gases. In order to avoid overcharge and overdischarge, we need to use a suitable charger, charge according to the capacity and voltage of the battery, and do not charge or discharge for a long time until the battery cannot supply power. Ensure that the battery is replenished in time to avoid too low or too high battery power. If the battery is not used for a long time, it should also be charged regularly to prevent the battery from overdischarge.

2. Adjusting the balance

Each single battery in the power banks may have inconsistent capacity or voltage due to manufacturing or use, which will lead to reduced performance of the battery pack, and even overcharge or overdischarge. In order to adjust the balance of the battery pack, we need to regularly detect the voltage and capacity of each single battery, charge the battery with low voltage separately, discharge the battery with high voltage separately, so that the voltage and capacity of each battery are as consistent as possible.

3. Maintain an appropriate temperature

Temperature has a significant impact on the performance and lifespan of lead-acid batteries. Both excessively high and low temperatures will reduce the capacity and efficiency of the batteries, and even cause damage to them. Generally speaking, the suitable operating temperature range for lead-acid batteries is 15-25℃. If the temperature exceeds 40℃ or drops below 0℃, the battery's capacity will significantly decrease, and the charging and discharging performance will also deteriorate. Therefore, we should try to avoid using or storing batteries in high-temperature or low-temperature environments. If it is necessary to use them, some measures such as adding insulation layers or installing cooling fans should be taken to maintain the temperature.
